Acquiring a New franchise? Be Careful Making Your choice
Acquiring a new franchise could be very profitable. You will be buying into an existing, proven business model with a track record, improving your chances of success. As long as you have the related skills, or the passion (preferably both) for the chosen industry, you have an even better chance of being successful at it.
Firstly, look at the total cost of the project. The cost of acquisition or registration, and shop fitting isn’t all there is to it. There is also the costs surrounding legal documentation, products or stock purchases, and the staff training cost. If you are not prepared for everything, you may find yourself without running capital, heading for disaster.
Next, look at market penetration and saturation. How far away is your closest new franchise colleague? How big is the area, and the portion of the population you will be dealing with? If there are other similar franchises in the area, why would customers come to you? Do you have an advantage, or a unique selling proposition?
Scrutinize the franchise agreement, and have a lawyer with a business background read through it as well. Ascertain what the limitations, expectations, commitments, and possible loopholes (for the company) might be. It would be wise to talk to other owners of the same franchise, to learn how the company operates, performs, and adhere to their commitment.
Lastly, have a look at the support structure. How far are they willing to go to ensure your success? What training is offered for you, your manager, and the staff? How do they go about resolving issues and operational problems? You need to know if you might be running into a brick wall at a time you really need some help, or whether you will be able to depend on their support.
In contrast to starting an independent new business, buying a new franchise offers a much better chance of success. Because of the proven success and sustainability of the business model, the risk involved is a lot less. As long as you have done your homework, and made sure you are dealing with a reputable company, you should be on the way to profit.
