Buying a Franchise: Is it Worth The Cost ?

Many people dream of having their own business. Buying a franchise has certain definite advantages, but it also has its drawbacks. The costs involved are quite substantial, and although the chances of failure are less, the risk is still considerable. Owning your own business has its advantages, but be very careful when making a large investment by buying a franchise.
Buying a franchise allows you to work with an established, branded business model, reducing the risk involved. The lesser risk, however, comes at a cost. The initial franchise fee, costing anything up to hundreds of thousands of dollars, may be non-refundable. There is no escape route, so be sure about everything you are letting yourself into before making your final decision.

There are also other costs involved which can add up to substantial amounts. Shop fitting and inventory has to be done up to franchisor specifications, and is not negotiable. Other expenses include rent, utilities, insurance, operating license, and advertising.

Before getting into a franchise agreement, be sure to calculate exactly how much you can, and are willing to spend on getting your franchise up and running. There is always an element of risk involved in any business, so consider how much money you can afford to lose if anything should go wrong. Entering into a partnership agreement may reduce the risk, but it will also reduce the profit share. If you need to obtain financing to purchase the franchise (and most people do), doing your homework is even more important.

Besides looking at your own finances, scrutinize the franchise agreement. Search for any possible constraints that could hamper your operation, holding you back if a supplier cannot deliver, or has unreasonable increases. And seeing it’s a big investment, explore other competing franchises as well, and note the differences.

Buying a franchise is not something to be rushed into, or done without very careful consideration. Eventually, though, the benefits outweigh the drawbacks, hence the popularity of franchises, despite the cost involved. As long as your planning and investigation was done properly, you can be on the road to substantial profit. You just have to be prepared for what you are getting into.
