Franchise Business Opportunity: Is It Worth Buying One?

There are hundreds of thousands of franchise businesses in the United States, and every year seems to bring more and more of them, withe fewer and fewer independent businesses.

This is understandable, as buying a franchise business opportunity makes a lot of sense for someone who’s thinking of starting their own business.  A franchise is a lot more likely to be successful than an independent start up, for a lot of different reasons.  And it won’t necessarily cost more than starting your own business from scratch, and figuring out everything you need to know on your own.  Yes, sometimes it will cost more, but generally it’s worth paying the difference.

Think of how much work you’ll have to do to get your business off the ground, and how many hundreds or thousands of little details you’ll need to work out, and get just right if you want your new start up to succeed.  In fact, this is one of the big reasons so many start up fail.  The owners simply didn’t know enough about what they were getting into before staring their business.  Almost every single one of them thought they knew, but soon found out they were in over their heads, after they had spent tens of thousands of dollars on what seemed like a great idea at the time.  But with a franchise business opportunity, almost all of that work is done for you.  You don’t need to reinvent the wheel.

Some people avoid buying a franchise business opportunity because they don’t want to pay franchise fees.  But in most cases, that’s cutting off your nose to spite your face.  Yes, if your franchise is successful, you’ll be paying a certain percentage of your income to the franchisor.  But that’s usually money well spent, and the money and benefits you gain from being part of a national franchise will far outweigh the fees you pay over the years.  If that weren’t the case, then ask yourself why so many franchises are sold in America ever year?  Investors keep buying them, and paying the fees, because they’re usually profitable.  So don’t be penny wise and pound foolish.  If you’re serious about staring a business of your own, give serious consideration to buying a franchise.
