How to Buy a Franchise……

Buying a franchise is a big decision for most people. On the one hand it is exciting, and on the other it can be nerve wracking. Especially if you’re not sure how to buy a franchise…..

Firstly, compare the concept of a franchise with starting from scratch. Having a franchise does hold many advantages, but depending on the business, and your local market, it might not be the only option. And even without doing financial calculations, you may not appreciate the restrictions of a franchise agreement.

Once you have reached a decision, having decided on the franchise option, do a careful evaluation of your skills, knowledge, personality and experience. Do you have the required abilities to run the franchise you are interested in? If you lack some skills or knowledge, will you employ someone who has it, or will you acquire them yourself? Are you up to the type of contact you will have with the public, and your staff? If you are not an assertive person by nature, you may find your staff walking over you. And if you have to realize that you have made a mistake after a few months, it might just be a costly one…..

Having compiled a short list, start analyzing the possibilities. Scrutinize the news for any indications, good or bad, and talk to different owners of these selected franchises. The most valuable information is obtained from the person “on the floor”. The more information you have available, the better your ability to make the right choice.

Be clear on how much money you will need. Besides the actual franchise cost, you have to cover for shop fitting, supplies, staff, training, advertising, and running capital to carry you until the business can support itself. You will also need some extra in case of unexpected expenses. Many people who did not know how to buy a franchise, did not prepare themselves properly, and went down. Don’t become another statistic.

The last consideration is the franchise agreement. Consult a franchise attorney to help you scrutinize the agreement, and explain all the details to you. Discuss the implications of restrictions and commitments from either side. The franchisor has a proven business model in place, but you have to be comfortable with it, and understand it.

Now that you know the basics on how to buy a franchise, you can make an informed decision, and be able to deal with a company you feel comfortable with, doing something you enjoy on the way to success.
